Garuda aircraft overshoots Pekanbaru runway

Bad weather was blamed for a Garuda Indonesia aircraft overshooting the runway of Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport in Pekanbaru, Riau province, on Tuesday.

The GA-174 flight was carrying 162 passengers, who departed from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 1:50 p.m. It arrived in Pekanbaru at 3:30 p.m.

"Torrential rain was pouring down when the Garuda aircraft landed. The aircraft suffered no damage and all the passengers are safe," Garuda vice president of corporate communications Pujobroto told The Jakarta Post.

One of passengers on board the Boeing B737-800 Next Generation (NG) was Environment Minister Balthasar Berth Kambuaya.

No injuries were reported.

Earlier on March 30, a Batavia Air aircraft also skidded on the runway. Two different Lion Air aircraft overran the runway on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. (nvn)
